Legionella Testing and Water Sampling in Leeds and West Yorkshire

Water sampling

Sampling shows whether your controls are working. Samples are taken to recognised standards and analysed by a UKAS-accredited laboratory, and we explain the result in plain English.

Water Hygiene Services is an independent Legionella control company based in Leeds. We take water samples for estates managers, facilities managers and building and property managers across the city.

What is Legionella testing, and when is it needed?

Legionella testing means taking water samples from chosen points in a building and sending them to a UKAS-accredited laboratory. It gives you documented evidence of whether your controls are working, and can show problems that temperature checks miss. We sample to BS 7592 and the guidance in HSG274, supporting ACoP L8.

There is no single frequency for sampling. Your risk assessment says whether it is needed and how often. For the full detail, see our UKAS Water Sampling page.

  • The site is higher risk, such as a hospital, care home or leisure facility
  • Temperature or flushing checks have failed
  • Cleaning, disinfection or remedial works have just been done
  • A previous result was positive
  • The building has been empty and is being brought back into use
  • Your risk assessment recommends it

Water sampling in Leeds buildings

Leeds is supplied by Yorkshire Water. Sampling points are chosen from your risk assessment, and usually include the outlets furthest from the source, showers, tanks and calorifiers. We sample the buildings as they are used, not as the drawings show them.

We take samples at:

  • Hospitals, clinics and care homes across the city
  • University and college buildings, particularly before a building returns to use after a break
  • City centre offices and apartment blocks with shared hot water plant
  • Hotels, bars and leisure venues
  • Buildings that have just had remedial works or a tank clean

How sampling works

  1. We agree the sampling points with you, based on your risk assessment.
  2. Our engineer takes the samples using a set method and records the temperature, location and time at each point.
  3. Samples go to a UKAS-accredited laboratory in suitable conditions.
  4. You receive a written report with the findings, explained in plain English.
  5. If anything is found, we recommend the next step and arrange re-sampling to confirm the system is clear.

Questions we are asked in Leeds

What do the results mean?

No Legionella detected: your controls are probably working. Carry on with routine monitoring, flushing and maintenance. Low levels detected: this should trigger a review of temperatures, water movement and use. Cleaning, flushing or small adjustments often bring the system back under control. High levels detected: this needs prompt action, which may include restricting outlets, disinfecting part of the system and investigating the cause.

Do we need sampling after a tank clean or remedial works?

Not always, but it is common. It confirms the work has done what it was meant to do. Your risk assessment sets the requirement.

A sample came back positive. What now?

Act quickly and keep records. We review the system, advise on flushing, cleaning, disinfection or remedial works, and re-sample to confirm.
