York has an unusual mix of historic buildings, hotels and universities, and its water systems are just as varied. We carry out Legionella risk assessments there from our Leeds base, about 25 miles away.
Water Hygiene Services is an independent Legionella control company. We work with estates managers, facilities managers, and building and property managers in York who need to show that the risk has been assessed and controlled, whatever the age of the building.
We assess to HSG274 and give you a clear report with the actions ranked by risk.

What a Legionella risk assessment covers
We survey your hot and cold water systems, find where Legionella could grow, record what we find in a written report, and give you a prioritised action plan. Our assessments follow HSG274, supporting ACoP L8. For the full detail, see our Legionella Risk Assessment page.
Historic buildings and visitor trade
In listed and historic buildings, the usual fixes may not be allowed, or may need consent. A good assessment recommends controls that are practical in the building, such as flushing, temperature management and careful use of outlets, as well as changes to pipework where possible.
Visitor trade is seasonal, so hotels and attractions can have quiet and busy periods. Quiet rooms and outlets need a flushing routine. Yorkshire Water supplies York.
Leeds to York
York is around 25 miles from our Leeds office, We can plan to assess several buildings in the city on one visit.
We also cover Leeds, Harrogate and the rest of North Yorkshire.
Questions we are asked in York
Our hotel is in a listed building. Can you still make recommendations?
Yes. We recommend controls that work in your building, and flag anything that may need consent. We do not assume you can change the pipework.
We have rooms that are not used in the winter. What should we do?
Unused rooms need a flushing routine, or the outlets can be isolated and drained. We set out the options in the report.
Do student houses need an assessment?
Landlords of rented properties have a duty to assess and control the risk. For simple domestic-type systems the assessment is short, and we tell you what is proportionate.
