We cover Newcastle and the North East. We are Leeds-based, about 95 miles away up the A1, and we plan each visit in advance and group sites together. If you manage buildings there, monitoring is how you show every month that your water systems are under control.
Water Hygiene Services is an independent Legionella control company based in Leeds, about 95 miles from Newcastle. We run planned monitoring programmes for estates managers, facilities managers and building and property managers in Newcastle and the North East, to HSG274.

What is Legionella monitoring, and what does it include?
Legionella monitoring is the routine checking and recording of your hot and cold water systems to show that the control measures in your risk assessment are working. HSG274 sets out the checks and how often they are usually done, supporting ACoP L8.
You remain the duty holder. We carry out the checks and keep the logbook complete, so you can show an auditor, insurer or inspector that the duty is being met. For the full detail, see our Legionella Monitoring page.
- Hot water stored at 60 degrees or above
- Hot water at outlets at 50 degrees or above within one minute (55 degrees or above in healthcare premises)
- Cold water below 20 degrees within two minutes of running
- Little-used outlets flushed, usually weekly
- Shower heads cleaned and descaled, usually quarterly
- Tanks and calorifiers inspected, usually annually
- Thermostatic mixing valves checked at least annually
Monitoring in Newcastle buildings
Northumbrian Water supplies the area. Most monitoring failures start inside the building: a calorifier running cool, an outlet nobody uses, a tank larger than the building needs. We build the schedule around what is installed.
Buildings we monitor include:
- Hospitals, clinics and care homes
- Quayside and city centre offices and hotels
- Residential blocks and housing provider stock
- University and college buildings, where holiday periods need a flushing plan
- Schools and public buildings
- Industrial and commercial units around Tyneside
How a monitoring programme works
- We review your risk assessment and written scheme and agree what is checked, where and how often.
- We agree a visit schedule with your site team and arrange access.
- Temperatures and flushing are checked and recorded at the outlets in your scheme.
- Tanks, calorifiers and other plant are inspected as the programme requires.
- Anything out of range is reported to you with a recommended action.
- The logbook is updated, so your records are complete and ready for inspection.
