If you manage buildings in Calderdale, monitoring is how you show every month that your water systems are under control.
Water Hygiene Services is an independent Legionella control company based in Leeds, about 16 miles from Calderdale. We run planned monitoring for estates managers, facilities managers and building and property managers in Calderdale, to HSG274.

What is Legionella monitoring, and what does it include?
Legionella monitoring is the routine checking and recording of your hot and cold water systems to show that the control measures in your risk assessment are working. HSG274 sets out the checks and how often they are usually done, supporting ACoP L8.
You remain the duty holder. We carry out the checks and keep the logbook complete, so you can show an auditor, insurer or inspector that the duty is being met. For the full detail, see our Legionella Monitoring page.
- Hot water stored at 60 degrees or above
- Hot water at outlets at 50 degrees or above within one minute (55 degrees or above in healthcare premises)
- Cold water below 20 degrees within two minutes of running
- Little-used outlets flushed, usually weekly
- Shower heads cleaned and descaled, usually quarterly
- Tanks and calorifiers inspected, usually annually
- Thermostatic mixing valves checked at least annually
Monitoring in Calderdale buildings
Yorkshire Water supplies the area. Many Calderdale buildings are older stone buildings with long and awkward pipe runs, and some are only busy in the tourist season. Monitoring concentrates on the quiet outlets and old pipework.
Buildings we monitor include:
- Hotels, inns, bed and breakfasts and holiday lets in the Calder Valley and the Pennine villages
- Mill buildings converted to flats, workshops and creative businesses
- The hospital and other health premises
- Care homes and residential homes
- Schools and colleges across the borough
- Pubs, restaurants and event venues, which can be busy at weekends and quiet midweek
How a monitoring programme works
- We review your risk assessment and written scheme and agree what is checked, where and how often.
- We agree a visit schedule with your site team and arrange access.
- Temperatures and flushing are checked and recorded at the outlets in your scheme.
- Tanks, calorifiers and other plant are inspected as the programme requires.
- Anything out of range is reported to you with a recommended action.
- The logbook is updated, so your records are complete and ready for inspection.
